Demand Response
What is this programme?
Power outages can be costly for plant managers, but demand response programmes offer a solution.
By adjusting energy usage during times of peak demand, your plant can support Ireland's transition to renewable energy.
The installation of an HVO-powered generator will enable the site to take part in demand response with no operational disruption and increase the site's resilience to power outages.
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is an advanced renewable diesel alternative that eliminates up to 90% of net CO2 emissions.
Step-by-Step Process
How demand management works
- Signal Reception: Instruction is sent from the national grid (EirGrid) to CoolPlanet.
- Response Initiation: CoolPlanet communicates directly with your site, ensuring that flexible energy assets are ready to respond to grid demands.
- Action: CoolPlanet handles the entire process, adjusting your site’s power usage by reducing energy consumption or switching to backup generation using sustainable HVO fuel. This is done seamlessly, without any need for manual intervention or disruptions to your operations.
Reward: Your site earns payments for participation in demand response programmes using renewable resources, all without experiencing any operational disruptions and doing it in a sustainable manner.
Benefits
Supply Security
No Capital Cost
CoolPlanet finances the entire project, so you can enhance your energy infrastructure with zero upfront investment.*
Green Solution
Contribute to a more sustainable grid by utilising HVO fuel, a renewable, low-emission alternative to traditional fuels.
Revenue Generation
Earn incentive payments for reducing or shifting your energy usage, turning demand response into a reliable income stream for your business.
No Disruption
CoolPlanet automates the full process so there's zero manual shutdown required. Our system seamlessly engages backup power, ensuring uninterrupted operations without your team's intervention.
More Control
Stabilise the electricity grid during peak demand and reduce blackout risks. Gain control over your energy use with onsite electricity generation, ensuring resilience and continuous operations.
Demand Response
Demand Side Response programmes incentivise major energy users to cut power use during peak times with hefty fees, boosting grid reliability and supporting energy efficiency, renewable integration, and increased generation capacity when demand for power is at its peak.
Assets as a Service
CoolPlanet empowers organisations with zero-upfront-cost electrification through 'flexible assets' like Heat Pumps, Batteries, and Backup Generators, improving energy resilience and lowering both energy costs and carbon emissions. We offer a full turnkey solution.
The support and feedback ... helps us a lot, especially with processing problems and noticing equipment that had not been running efficiently.Trevor Meredith – Process Director, Solbar Food Technologies

What is an HVO generator?
An HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) generator is a backup power system that runs on a sustainable, low-emission fuel derived from vegetable oils and animal fats. These generators are designed to provide reliable power during outages while significantly reducing carbon emissions, making them an eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel generators.
Is my business eligible for this initiative?
To be eligible for the scheme:
- Your site’s energy consumption should be approximately 3.5 million kWh per year or more.
- A reliable electricity supply must be critical to your production operations.
- You need to have space available to accommodate upgrades to your site’s electrical infrastructure, including a container (approximately 15m x 3m) that will house the generator.
Is this initiative truly free to participate in?
Participation is subject to a site survey. CoolPlanet will assess your site’s electrical and mechanical infrastructure to determine the cost of installing a generator. Depending on the results, the scheme could be offered at no cost, and in some cases, your site may even earn additional revenue from having a generator installed.
How does CoolPlanet benefit from this initiative?
CoolPlanet is a licensed aggregator that trades generation capacity within the Integrated Single Electricity Market (I-SEM) and capacity markets. We generate revenue by managing and optimizing your energy assets within these markets.
How long does the installation process take?
The installation timeline depends on the findings of the site survey. Key factors include whether your site requires planning permission to install the generator. Typically, the process can take between 6 months to 1 year.
